Pearl Continental Hotel, Peshawar, Pakistan

Despite having been to the Pearl Continental Hotel many times, I only visited it to eat and drink, I haven’t actually stayed here. I was on somewhat of a budget when I visited Peshawar, so I tended to leave my $1 or $2 a night accommodation in the town and head for the Pearl Continental for the buffet breakfast which was fabulous and about double the price of my accommodation. This was also one of only three places in Pakistan, a strict Muslim country, where westerners could get a beer. A converted room on the fifth floor of the hotel, the bar was only available for Westerners and consequently, It got fairly busy with a mix of expats and travellers passing through or indeed, coming from miles around, the other two bars were in Karachi and Lahore. It was however a nice oasis away from the hustle and bustle of this border town.
The hotel itself is pretty stunning, or at least it was before it got blown up by the Taliban. I happened to stay during Ramadan and the evening buffet was stunning with many locals coming in just to eat once the sun went down, an interesting place to say the least.
